Hey, Weirdos...have you seen my heart anywhere? Sarah destroyed it with this book. I'm not even kidding when I say that this was the single saddest book I have ever read in my life, even trumping Insurgent, which made me bawl.
If you guys haven't picked this book up yet, you need to. It still boggles my mind how amazing Sarah is at writing. Her technique is flawless, and her characters are impeccable!
But enough fangirling. Let's get back to the review.
I'm not sure how I can divide this into what I did and didn't like, because I honestly can't think of a single thing I didn't like! So this is going to be a slightly different book review, in that I will divide it into what I loved and what I wish. If you don't understand, you will shortly.
What I Loved:
Right away, during chapters 1-2, when she brought the head and trophies to the king, I was fooled. That's just how good Susan is at writing, because I was going through the same thought patterns as Chaol (who, by the way, I ship so hard. My OTP for sure). Imagine my relief when I found out it was all a ruse! Whew!
Quote from journal: "I like how Celaena is merciful to those she is sent to kill, and it's suspenseful how she keeps that deadly secret from the king."
The name Chaol is perfect. I hadn't heard it before reading this series, but I'm hooked. It's one of those names that's just so perfect and simple.
Was on pins and needles during the scene at the library with the suspicious creature!
Snarky, talking skull knocker? Obsessed! Absolutely adored the addition of Mort. He had such a distinct voice, and a unique way of grinding on Celaena's nerves that you can't help but like him.
The way Chaol refuses to admit to himself that he is in love with Celaena only makes us ship them more. This is how writing should be done, kids. Write that down.
Quote from journal: "I find it interesting that Celaena is forced to be on the side [of people] she hates, watching as people she likes are the ones targeted."
When Chaol and Celaena finally got together (rather intensely I might add) I was like YES YES YES. Quote from journal: "Happy butterfly feelings everywhere. Chaol + Celaena = ♥."
Third person PoV sure gets things done. Dayum.
After Nehemia died and Celaena went out to find Grave, I was surprisingly happy with how she mutilated him. Badass woman are amazing. (I swear I'm not creepy...)
I was so upset by Celaena trying to kill Chaol that I told myself "If Chaol dies I will never read another Throne of Glass book again." Thank goodness he didn't die!
At first I wasn't sure about Celaena being a Fae, but now that I think about it, I always knew in a way.
Making Archer the bad guy in the end was genius! I never suspected, but I suppose that was the point :)
What I Wish:
I liked the addition of Hollin in this book, but I wished that Celaena had somehow humiliated him with her own snarky attitude. That would have been epic! Quote from journal: "I betcha Celaena gives Hollin complete hell!"
The mention of Chaol's former lover interest, Lysandra, made my blood boil. I desperately wanted her to show up and have Celaena smack her around a little bit. Now that Celaena has been shipped off...I'm worried that she WILL come back and try to take back his heart. In which case I will open a portal into that world and smack her around myself.
I wanted more explanation about the creature in the tunnels, and the portal creatures, and what the heck the wyrdgate is, But I suppose that's Sarah's intention; bring us back for book 3!
Conclusion: Crown of Midnight recieves 5 stars out of 5 from me! Flawlessly written and a work of art! I almost wish that this series will never become a movie. It's perfect as a book.
Whew! That only took an hour and a half! But it was so worth it, right? If you enjoyed this review and would like to see more like it, please shoot me a comment, email, or share it!
I'm taking a one week break from reading because my brain needs a breather after this book! I can tell you I'll be reading Legend by Marie Lu next. It'll be a new experience for me because I've heard so much about this author, but have never had the chance to read any of her books! Now that I've bought one, I suppose there's no time like the present.
As always: Stay Weird!
PS: Never let yourself look at fanart before you've finished a series! I knew beforehand that Nehemia was going to die and that Chaolaena was going to happen...don't make that mistake!
PPS: Chaolaena's couple song is Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift
