A: My first novel was a chick lit. Yep. So different from what I write now (but a genre I love to read). I thought it would be "easy" because of the "lighter fare." I was WAY wrong. Good chick lit is deep and complex without the reader even realizing it, and I was NOT a skilled enough writer to pull that off yet!
Q: If people stopped buying and reading books, what would you do? Would you continue to write or pursue another career?
A: I would follow the market. I consider myself a storyteller -- not a writer -- so whatever medium is needed to tell my story is fine by me! :D
Q: Where do you get most of your inspiration? Where do your stories begin?
A: Most of my inspiration comes from music. I really see scenes play out to whatever I'm currently musically obsessed with. Whole characters will come from a single piece of music -- such as Safiya fon Hasstrel from TRUTHWITCH. I listen to "El Dorado" by Two Steps from Hell and that is just HER. :)
A: I love all genres and read really widely, but when I was a teen/preteen, I almost ONLY read fantasy. After my failed chick lit attempt, I realized I should go back to the books that first made ME want to write (Lloyd Alexander, Tamora Pierce) and try to write for a similar audience. Those stories have stuck with me more strongly than any others in my life, and I realized I wanted to have a similar impact on young readers.
Q: Do you remember when your books started to get attention? What was it like starting out?
A: Um, are they getting attention? HA! I feel like it's hard to know how well a book is doing if you aren't one of the super huge bestsellers. I have fan mail (which is the highlight of my life) and I interact with readers online, but for the most part, I feel like my books are still very quiet. And that's not a bad thing! The few fans I do have are INCREDIBLE and I've really been able to forge a one-on-one connection with them.
And last but not least...
Q: If cookies were destroyed and vanished completely from the face of the earth (and you couldn't make them yourself) what would you do??
A: I would shed a thousand tears!! And then start eating cake. ;)
Thanks, Sooz! Stay Strange and Ever After!
